Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our programs are designed for COVID-cautious youth and families looking for safe, meaningful opportunities for kids to learn, connect, and have fun without giving up the precautions that matter to them. We offer both masked in-person programs and virtual options across a range of ages and interests.

  • We offer masked in-person summer camps, virtual group classes, and a robotics sequence that includes both a virtual course and an in-person makerspace program. Topics include STEM, creative arts, filmmaking, math, worldbuilding, self-advocacy, leadership, and robotics.

  • By “COVID-cautious,” we mean that our programs are designed for families who still value strong airborne illness precautions and want those precautions taken seriously. For in-person programs, that includes high-filtration masks (inside and outside), HEPA air purifiers, ventilation, safer meal procedures, and clear expectations around staying home when sick. Just as importantly, it means creating a space where kids do not have to explain or defend why these precautions matter to them. We want students to be able to learn, socialize, and have fun in an environment where caution is understood as normal and community-minded.

  • The programs are led by Stephanie Schmit, founder of Boston Private Tutors, an MIT mechanical engineer and longtime educator who created these offerings to give COVID-cautious youth more opportunities for community, confidence-building, and joyful learning.

  • Yes. We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships and sliding scale spots to help make the programs more accessible to families for whom cost would otherwise be a barrier. [The application link is at the bottom of this page.]

  • For in-person camps, we announce the general region first and confirm the final venue at least 30 days before the program begins. For virtual programs, we propose class times based on demand, and if enough families need another option, we may open an additional section.

  • The Peer Leader Program is a selective volunteer leadership opportunity for teens ages 16–18 who want hands-on experience mentoring younger students in a structured, high-expectation environment. Peer Leaders support instructors, help small groups stay engaged and included, and build real leadership, communication, and facilitation skills.

  • Yes. Teens ages 16–18 are encouraged to apply for the Peer Leader Program rather than enrolling as campers. This is a strong fit for high school students who are reliable, engaged, and interested in mentoring younger students.
