Teach With Boston Private Tutors
Boston Private Tutors is growing our team of thoughtful, creative educators and staff members. We offer one-on-one tutoring, group homeschool courses, workshops, summer camps, and community programs, both virtually and in-person in the Greater Boston area.
We are a small company, so we value people who communicate clearly, take ownership of their work, and enjoy helping build better programs and systems. We care about excellent subject knowledge, but we also care deeply about curiosity, kindness, safety, organization, and respect for young people.
We are currently seeking:
STEM Tutors (Greater Boston, Virtual)
Engineering/Makerspace Instructors (Greater Boston)
Virtual Tutors
Homeschool course instructors
Summer camp instructors and youth mentors
Some applicants may be a good fit for more than one role.

Most Urgently Needed
Makerspace and Hands-On Instruction (Norwood)
Boston Private Tutors runs hands-on homeschool classes at Mill Forge, a makerspace in Norwood. Our beginner shop class teaches woodworking (students build a step stool), metalworking (a toolbox), and 3D printing, followed by a capstone project of each student's choice. The fall class meets Wednesday mornings through mid-December, and we are planning additional sections and a spring semester.
These roles are paid contractor work at approximately $50/hr. Schedules are flexible: weekday mornings, afternoons, and weekends are all in play. A background check is required.
You only need to be a fit for one role, not all of them.
Lead Engineering Instructor
We are looking for someone who can run a shop full of teenagers safely and who has big-picture making instincts. That means seeing a problem three steps before it happens, knowing when a student's plan won't work and redirecting them without deflating them, and staying calm and useful when a build goes sideways right before cleanup. Any making, engineering, or trade background is welcome. Safety, judgment, and teaching ability matter most, and teaching experience is required for this role.Woodworking
Layout and measuring, hand tools, basic joinery, safe operation of shop machines, sanding, and finishing.Metalworking
Cutting, filing, grinding, drilling, and sheet metal work, with PPE and safety habits you can model and enforce.3D Modeling and Printing
We have two openings: an instructor for the group class and a tutor for one [in-person / virtual] one-on-one student. Skills include CAD instruction (Tinkercad, Onshape, Fusion), designing for printability, tolerances, slicing, running printers, and diagnosing failed prints.Building Co-Teacher for Elementary and Kindergarten Workshops
Hand tools, glue guns, cardboard and scrap, and simple mechanisms. The curriculum is already written and an experienced lead runs each workshop; you are the second adult. Patience and energy matter more than technical depth.Electronics and Arduino (Spring 2027)
Breadboarding, soldering, sensors, motors, microcontrollers, and debugging a circuit with a student rather than for them. This class is still being designed, so you can help build the curriculum, co-teach it, or lead it outright. How to Apply for Makerspace Roles

Subjects We Teach
We are hiring instructors across the full range of STEM subjects, including:
Elementary, middle school, and high school mathematics
Algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, competition math, and advanced coursework
Biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, earth and space science, anatomy, health science, and other laboratory sciences
Computer science, programming, data science, and technology
Engineering, robotics, electronics, design, CAD, 3D printing, fabrication, woodworking, metalworking, and makerspace instruction
SAT, ACT, AP, and other academic or standardized test preparation
We are especially interested in educators who can teach chemistry, biology, computer science, engineering, robotics, or hands-on building and fabrication.
Although our traditional focus has been STEM for grades 6–12, we are also hiring instructors in:
Elementary education
Social-emotional learning, confidence, boundaries, self-advocacy, and healthy relationships
Communication, teamwork, leadership, public speaking, and debate
Creative writing, literature, history, social science, and other humanities
Visual art, filmmaking, theater, music, and other creative fields
Interdisciplinary and project-based learning
Teaching neurodivergent students and students with varied learning and access needs
One-on-One Tutoring
Our tutors do more than explain content or help students finish assignments. Strong tutors can identify what a student understands, uncover the source of confusion, explain difficult ideas in several ways, and coach students through productive struggle.
We want students to become more confident and independent over time. Tutors teach learning strategies alongside academic content, including planning, active recall, problem-solving, studying, and recognizing when and how to ask for help.
Tutors should be able to:
Build warm, respectful relationships with students
Adapt explanations and activities to an individual learner
Communicate clearly with parents and the Boston Private Tutors team
Prepare for lessons and keep useful records of student progress
Help students develop curiosity, perseverance, and confidence
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and dependable schedules
Homeschool Courses and Group Programs
We also hire instructors to design and lead homeschool courses, workshops, and other small-group programs.
Tutoring and course leadership require different strengths. An excellent tutor may not want to design a complete course, while an excellent course instructor may specialize in group learning rather than one-on-one academic support. Applicants may be a good fit for either or both roles.
Course instructors should enjoy:
Developing engaging curricula and project-based lessons
Facilitating discussions and collaborative work
Building a positive group culture
Adjusting activities for students with different experience levels
Creating projects that give students meaningful choices
Helping students produce, build, investigate, perform, or communicate something real
Teaching both content and skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and communication
We welcome experienced teachers and professional tutors as well as engineers, scientists, artists, writers, makers, graduate students, and other subject-matter experts with strong teaching ability.
We are particularly interested in people who love their subjects, think carefully about how students learn, and want to collaborate with other educators instead of working in isolation.
