VIRTUAL PARENT SEMINAR · ONE HOUR

Study Smarter

How Parents Can Help Kids Learn More Effectively

Seminar Date and Time: Saturday, November 14th at 2 PM Easter Time

Students are constantly told to study harder, but almost never taught how to study.

Many of the brightest, hardest-working students struggle not because they’re lazy or unmotivated, but because no one has given them a system. They’re told to pay attention, be more organized, and review their work, without concrete steps for doing any of it. So they spend hours rereading notes and watching videos, and still walk into tests unprepared.

In this one-hour virtual seminar, Stephanie Schmit, MIT engineer and founder of Boston Private Tutors, gives parents practical tools to help their kids learn more effectively. None of it involves nagging, micromanaging, or doing the work for them

The Approach

  • 01 · Diagnose

    instead of judging

A wrong answer has a cause: a concept gap, a method error, a procedure slip, an attention lapse, a setup problem, or test-day pressure. Each has a different fix, and “study harder” fixes none of them.

  • 02 · Build Practice Systems

    instead of micromanaging

Understanding a skill once is not the same as performing it reliably. No coach explains a cartwheel and expects it perfect every time after. Consistency comes from the right kind of practice.

  • 03 · Coach Performance

    instead of correcting mistakes

Students practice retrieving what they know under real test conditions, with the clock running, so they hold up when it counts.

The Result

Students who study more effectively in less time, understand the material more deeply, earn higher grades, and carry these skills into college and beyond.

Parents Will Leave Knowing How To

  • Spot ineffective studying, like rereading notes, passively watching videos, or checking answers too soon

  • Replace “study harder” with specific advice that builds confidence instead of shame or defensiveness

  • Help their child figure out why a mistake happened and what to do about it

  • Set up simple systems so students know what to do, when to do it, and how to keep track

  • Reduce careless errors, test anxiety, and freezing under pressure

  • Build the independent learning habits students will need in college and beyond

About Stephanie

Stephanie Schmit earned her degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and has tutored hundreds of middle school, high school, and college students in math, physics, and engineering. After working in jet engine manufacturing, she spent three years teaching in India and China, then trained and performed as a circus acrobat in the UK.

Engineering taught her to find exactly where a system breaks. Circus taught her how practice turns understanding into reliable performance. She founded Boston Private Tutors in 2017 to bring both to how students learn, and now leads a team of experienced STEM tutors serving families in Boston and online.
