Fall Forest Adventure Day
Program Information
More Than an Afternoon in the Woods
Boston Private Tutors and Rhode Island Accessible Forest School are holding our first outdoor event for our youngest community members (ages 3-9) and their families on November 1st 2026. Our Fall Forest Adventure Day has been designed to give families who take COVID seriously the chance to enjoy some time together outdoors while making new friends and connecting with like-minded peers.
The Adventure will include a range of creative and nature-based activities for young explorers to enjoy as well as a few fun, cozy activities for parents and caregivers. Your children will have the opportunity to participate in structured play out of your eyesight as part of a group, you will be able to rest easy due to our masking and molecular test requirements, and the whole family can make connections that will hopefully last beyond the event.
-
Group games, bubbles, crafts, a scavenger hunt, autumn leaf collecting, and a nature walk through the woods, where wild bunnies, deer, frogs, wild turkeys and plenty of birds are regular visitors.
We'll start with a welcome circle and a quick feelings check-in so everyone knows what's coming, then play, learn, explore, and grow together.
Kids who want to watch before they join are welcome to. Kids who need a parent close can have one.
-
Underneath the fun, kids practice the social skills that are hardest to learn without other kids around:
Joining in: asking to play, and inviting a kid who's hanging back
Taking turns and sharing: the bubble wands, the magnifying glass, the scavenger hunt map
Working out disagreements: saying what happened, listening to the other kid, and agreeing on a fix
Expressing themselves: naming how they feel, saying what they want, and telling the group what they found
Handling big feelings: frustration, disappointment when a game ends, and nerves in a new group
Teamwork: solving the scavenger hunt clues together
Boundaries in active play: "stop means stop," and asking before tagging or holding hands
When kids disagree, our instructors don't referee. They help each kid say what happened and how they feel, listen to the other kid, and come up with a fix together. It's the part of group play that's hardest to practice at home, and one of the most useful.
They'll also be in a whole group of kids who mask, where a mask is ordinary and nothing to explain. Kids 10 and up who come as peer leaders practice leading: explaining a game, being patient, and helping little kids work things out.
This workshop gives kids a real chance to practice with other kids.
-
You'll have a cozy spot of your own, out of the kids' line of sight but close by, with blankets and games. No forced mingling. Play a game, trade notes, or enjoy the quiet.
Each grown-up also takes one 30-minute turn helping with an activity. It keeps us at about one adult for every four kids, and it's an easy way to meet people.
-
A COVID-cautious family's home about 15 miles west of Providence, with a big yard, a porch and deck, a large grassy field, and woods. Everything happens outdoors. We'll send the address after you register.

Precautions
You need specifics to decide whether an event fits your family's risk tolerance, so here they are.
Respirators for everyone, the whole time, outdoors included: N95 or better for adults, KF94/KN95 or better for kids
Molecular test the morning of. Every household member tests with an unexpired Metrix or other molecular test. Pooled household testing is fine if you're experienced with it. No reader? We'll lend one by arrangement; tell us when you register.
For 7 days beforehand, every household member wears a respirator in all indoor spaces outside your own home (N95 or better for adults, KF94/KN95 or better for kids), and masks outdoors off your own property, or on it when within 40 feet of where others may pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it structured, or free play?
Mostly structured. Instructors run the games, crafts and scavenger hunt, and coach the social moments: joining a game, taking turns, handling big feelings, working out a disagreement. Kids who want to watch before they join are welcome to.
My child won't leave my side. Is that OK?
You can stay as close as they need.
Do kids have to mask outside?
Yes, everyone wears a respirator the whole time, kids and adults, outdoors included.
Will there be food or water?
Masks stay on the whole time, so there's no shared snack. We'll take water breaks in your family’s vehicle.
We don't have a Metrix or other molecular test reader.
No problem, we lend them. Let us know when you register so we can arrange it.
What if someone in our family gets sick?
Stay home and we'll refund you in full. That goes for a positive test or any symptoms in your household.
I have multiple kids, and one or more are 10 or older. Can they come?
A limited number of older siblings can attend as peer leaders by prior arrangement. Peer leaders help run games, support younger kids, and help them work through challenges together. Email info@bostonprivatetutors.com to set it up.
My child is 2. Can they come?
While they'll be too young to participate in the Fall Forest Adventure Day, we understand younger siblings might need to accompany parents. Please let us know if this applies to you and we can work on a solution.
If anyone is sick, meaning a positive test or symptoms of any respiratory, gastrointestinal or other infectious illness in your household, please stay home. We'll refund your registration in full.
Grown-ups stay on site for the whole event.
Where exactly is it?
At a COVID-cautious family's home about 15 miles west of Providence. We share the address once you register, to protect their privacy.
What should we wear?
Layers, hats, gloves, and closed-toe shoes that can get muddy. Long pants tucked into socks help with ticks. We'll do tick checks at the end; please check again at home. Clocks fall back that morning (daylight saving time ends Nov 1), and sunset is around 4:35, so it will be cool and getting dim by the end.
Are there bathrooms?
Outdoor camping bathroom and sink available.
What if it rains?
There is a rain date of Nov 7.
Can we take photos?
Photos cannot be posted online without consent of those in the photo. Any photos that show the house or identifying structures cannot be posted online.
Why $95 for two hours?
It's two hours, but it isn't a drop-in activity. Experienced instructors run everything and coach kids through joining in, sharing and working out disagreements, with about one adult for every four kids. It covers the instructors’ time and gas money, all the materials, test readers to lend, and curriculum planning. Siblings are $65 and grown-ups are free, and financial aid is available.
