Program Info

Students will be shipped a small robot kit to assemble and program during the course. Through hands-on building and coding challenges, students develop the foundational skills and confidence needed for in-person robotics projects. They'll gain fluency in core programming concepts like logic, loops, conditionals, and debugging while exploring how mechanical design—motors, gear ratios, linkages, and degrees of freedom—works together with code to create movement. As they assemble their robot using hand tools and run guided challenges, students learn to break complex problems into manageable steps, systematically troubleshoot issues, and connect their programming decisions to real-world robot behavior. Working independently with structured support and collaborating with peers in a supportive group setting, students build both technical skills and engineering intuition, developing the vocabulary and problem-solving mindset they need to design and build robots with confidence.

  • Yes. The current program design treats Code & Control: Virtual Robotics Programming as the prerequisite for Engineer & Iterate: Hands-On Robotics. The idea is to give students a shared foundation before they enter the makerspace environment.

  • Both parts of the robotics sequence are currently designed for ages 12–18. The virtual course runs first, and the in-person makerspace week follows later in the summer.
